FAQs

Art Therapy

Do I need to be good at art to try Art Therapy?

Not at all! Art Therapy isn’t about being artistic or making ‘good’ art — it’s about expressing yourself. No previous experience is needed, just a willingness to explore.

What happens in an Art Therapy session?

Each session typically includes time to check in, make art and explore outside in nature (if you’d like), and talk about anything that comes up. You can choose the materials you feel most comfortable with, and you’re always supported in a way that feels right for you.

Do I have to talk during Art Therapy?

Not if you don’t want to. Some people prefer to create quietly, while others like to talk as they work. We go at your pace.

What kind of materials will I use?

You’ll have access to a range of materials like paints, pastels, clay, natural objects, and collage. You can choose what feels best for you, and there’s no pressure to create in any specific way.

What happens to my artwork?

Your artwork is safely stored between sessions and kept confidential. You can choose to take it home at the end of therapy if you wish.

Is Art Therapy Confidential?

Yes, Art Therapy is confidential similar to other medical appointments. I won’t pass the private information from your sessions on to anyone, unless I am worried about your safety, or someone else’s. This is called a safeguarding concern, and if this happens I will talk to you first. If you are working in a group, everyone in the group will be asked to keep the discussions confidential. You are always welcome to talk about what comes up for you however. I will talk through all this with you before you start art therapy and make sure you understand and agree before you start sessions.

How long will I need Art Therapy?

That’s completely individual. Some people benefit from a short block of sessions, while others find ongoing support helpful over a longer period. We’ll discuss your goals together to see what feels best for you.

Can Art Therapy help if I find talking difficult?

Yes, absolutely. Art can give you another way to express feelings and experiences that are hard to put into words, which makes it a really helpful option if talking feels challenging.

EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a therapy that helps you process and heal from difficult or traumatic experiences by using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to support the brain’s natural healing processes.

What happens in an EMDR session?

Sessions involve identifying difficult memories or feelings, working through them using structured techniques, and using bilateral stimulation to reduce their emotional intensity. Sessions always move at your pace and are carefully managed to keep you feeling safe and supported.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. One of the benefits of EMDR is that you don’t have to go into full detail about your experiences if you don’t want to. We focus on the feelings and body sensations linked to memories without needing to retell everything.

How do I know if EMDR is right for me?

We’ll discuss your history, needs, and goals in an initial consultation. EMDR can help with trauma, anxiety, grief, and other difficulties, but we’ll decide together if it’s the right fit.

Is EMDR safe?

Yes, when delivered by a qualified therapist in a supportive environment. We’ll always ensure you’re feeling stable and grounded before, during, and after each session.

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

It depends on the complexity of what you’re working through. Some people notice changes after just a few sessions, while others may benefit from a longer process.

How much do sessions cost?
  • FREE 15-minute introductory phone call or meeting to discuss hopes and expectations
  • Individual EMDR/ Art Therapy (With adults only at present). Sessions at The Walnut Barn Therapy Studio – £80 per hour session
  • For a limited number of EMDR Therapy processing sessions extended sessions of 1.5 hours may be required. This would be discussed in advance and there would be a cost of £120 for these sessions.
Can EMDR be combined with Art Therapy?

Yes! At The Walnut Barn, we can combine EMDR with creative approaches, helping you explore feelings through art alongside processing memories. This can be a particularly gentle and effective way to work.

Nature Based Learning

What is nature-based learning?

Nature-based learning is an educational approach that uses the natural environment as a dynamic classroom. It encourages hands-on experiences, exploration, and observation to deepen understanding, critical thinking, and well-being while fostering a connection with nature.

Where do the sessions take place?

Our sessions are held at Rosuick Organic Farm in Cornwall, a beautiful and historic working farm that offers a rich learning environment for children, school groups, and individuals.
We we’ll soon be adding to our offer, with sessions at Gwealgues Organic Orchard. With around 6,000 trees, this peaceful and secluded spot offers the perfect space for safe and engaging learning. Gwealgues Organic Orchard features a purpose-built studio and a renovated agricultural building with high-quality facilities, including underfloor heating, accessible toilets, and ample indoor space. Additionally, for longer sessions, there is the opportunity to walk to the local beach, Kennack Sands, offering further possibilities for outdoor exploration and learning.

Who can take part in nature-based learning sessions?

We welcome:

  • Primary and secondary schools for curriculum-linked educational visits.
  • Small groups looking for immersive nature experiences.

  • Farm trails to explore crops, animals, and habitats.
  • Hands-on workshops such as wool working, cob brick making, creating natural dyes and bee education.

We recommend:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (layers, hats, suncream, waterproofs if needed).
  • Sturdy footwear (wellies or boots).
  • A packed lunch and reusable water bottle.
Do you have a risk assessment?

We have a farm visit risk assessment which will be emailed you prior to your visit. Please ensure all visiting staff and volunteers have read our risk assessment. Teachers/ group leaders are also welcome to visit the farm for a preliminary visit to carry-out their own risk assessments, which we particularly advise if you have group members with bespoke needs.
