Welcome to The Walnut Barn – and my first ever blog!

I wanted to start by introducing myself and sharing the story of how The Walnut Barn came to life.

My name’s Jen, and I live in Cornwall with my young family. I love being outdoors—ideally by the sea or surrounded by trees. One of my favourite things is looking up into the tree canopy, watching the dappled light glimmering through the leaves.

Having grown up on an organic farm in Cornwall, nature has always been a huge part of my life. I later moved to Bristol for work, spending eight years as a teacher in a specialist school for autistic children, young people, and individuals with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities. In this role, I came to understand that what was often labelled as “challenging behaviour” was actually a form of communication—especially for those unable to verbalize their thoughts and feelings.

I developed specialisms in behaviour and engagement, supporting not only my own class but also children and teachers across the school. Over time, I realized that many of the young people I worked with had experienced trauma. One moment, in particular, stays with me: I was supporting a young asylum seeker who had fled a war-torn country after witnessing unimaginable loss. Through art, he was able to express emotions and experiences that words couldn’t capture. I supported him with a compassionate, non-judgmental approach, and in doing so, I realized how vital this space was. I also knew I had so much more to learn in order to support others in a safe and meaningful way.

This led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Art Psychotherapy, where I graduated with distinction. During my studies, I had the opportunity to work in three incredible placements:

  • Studio Upstairs – a creative community supporting adult mental health in Bristol.
  • Community Learning Disabilities Team – where I provided art psychotherapy to adults with learning disabilities as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • The Priory Learning Trust – where I developed an art psychotherapy service for children and adolescents, offering both 1:1 and group sessions.

A common thread in my work was loss—whether through bereavement, trauma, or change. This, combined with my own personal experiences, led me to specialize in end-of-life, palliative, and bereavement care. I spent over three years at St. Peter’s Hospice, offering 1:1 psychotherapy to palliative patients, carers, and bereaved individuals. I also re-established bereavement groups and became the Accessibility Lead, focusing on Learning Disabilities and Neurodiversity.

Working in end-of-life care gave me a profound sense of perspective. Supporting people as they reflected on what truly mattered at the end of their lives encouraged me to do the same. After much thought and discussion with my family, we decided to return home to Cornwall—to the sea, to nature, and to be closer to our extended family.

The Birth of The Walnut Barn
And so, The Walnut Barn was born. (The story behind the name is one for another blog!)

Nestled on an organic farm in Cornwall, The Walnut Barn is a safe and inclusive space for people to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. We welcome individuals of all backgrounds, ages, genders, sexualities, and religions.

We also work closely with local schools, helping children connect with nature and experience the benefits of outdoor learning. Whether you’re looking for bereavement or palliative support, guidance through anxiety or identity challenges, or simply a space to reflect outside of the hustle and bustle of daily life, I’m here to welcome you.

Let’s Connect
Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey and the story behind The Walnut Barn. I look forward to connecting with you and hearing your story too.

Warm wishes,
Jen
